NEMA 17 (42mm) Non-Captive / Through-Shaft Type Hybrid Stepper Motor

The NEMA 17 (42mm) non-captive through-shaft type hybrid stepper motor combines a high-performance 2-phase 1.8° stepper motor with a linear actuator design where the nut is built into the motor rotor and rotates with it, while the lead screw passes entirely through the motor and moves linearly without rotating. This design offers unlimited stroke length (limited only by screw length) and allows for ±1° installation tilt tolerance, making it highly forgiving in multi-axis systems where perfect alignment is difficult to achieve. Unlike the fixed type, the non-captive design has no mechanical travel limit — the screw can continue moving as long as the screw length allows. However, external guide rails are required to prevent the load from rotating with the screw. This popular linear actuator is widely used in 3D printers, CNC routers, laser engravers, and pick-and-place machines where multiple units share a common rail and alignment is critical.
